Ruine Kronburg

Highlights und Sehenswürdigkeiten

The castle hill on which the ruins of Kronburg now stand was already inhabited in prehistoric times.

In 380, Johann von Starkenberg was granted permission to build a castle complex. In 1423, the Starkenberg family took part in a rebellion against the sovereign Friedl, having run out of funds. After the uprising was quelled, Kronburg Castle was taken from them. In 1504, the sovereign Maximilian I granted the castle as a fief to the Fieger family, who extensively rebuilt it and added outbuildings. The Fieger family died out in 1802. The castle had not been inhabited since 1766 and had been left to fall into disrepair. In 1985, the ‘Save Kronburg Castle’ association was founded and the castle complex was restored. Below the hill with its distinctive silhouette lies the Kronburg pilgrimage church and the Kronburg inn.

At the foot of the hill with its distinctive silhouette lies the Kronburg pilgrimage church and the Kronburg inn. The Kronburg pilgrimage site can be reached via a good road (3 km) through Schönwies or on foot from Rifenal (half an hour). A steep path leads from the pilgrimage site to the castle ruins; the walk takes about 15 minutes uphill.

The Kronburg Inn offers a wonderful place to stop for refreshments.
